Hanging a Flag Horizontally

The Basics

Hanging a horizontal flag from a building or porch requires specific steps to ensure it is displayed properly and securely. Here’s a guide to help you hang a horizontal flag effectively:

Flag Selection

Choose a flag that fits the dimensions of the area where it will be displayed. Horizontal flags are typically wider than they are tall and may feature designs or text optimized for horizontal display.

Flagpole

Use a flagpole to mount the flag horizontally on the side of the building or porch. The flagpole should extend outward at an angle, allowing the flag to hang down properly.

Mounting Bracket

Choose a bracket designed for horizontal flags. These brackets are typically angled to allow the flag to hang down at an appropriate angle. Attach the bracket to the wall or post using screws. Ensure the bracket is level and securely fastened. Consider an adjustable bracket that lets you change the angle depending on the flag or occasion.

The Angles

45-Degree Angle

Standard Angle

The most common and recommended angle for displaying a horizontal flag from a building or porch is 45 degrees. This angle provides a clear and prominent display while ensuring it hangs freely without obstruction. A 45-degree angle ensures that the flag is visible from a distance and allows it to catch the wind, creating a dynamic display.

Installation

Use a mounting bracket designed for a 45-degree angle. These brackets are widely available and easy to install.

30-Degree Angle

Alternative Angle

Some people prefer to hang their flags at a 30-degree angle for a more upright display. This angle can provide a slightly different aesthetic and may be suitable for certain architectural features. A 30-degree angle still offers good visibility but may not catch the wind as effectively as a 45-degree angle.

Installation

Ensure the mounting bracket can accommodate a 30-degree angle. Adjustments may be needed to achieve this angle.

Horizontal (90-Degree Angle to the Building)

Parallel to the Ground

In some cases, especially for ceremonial purposes or specific architectural designs, the flag may be hung horizontally, parallel to the ground. This means the flagpole is at a 90-degree angle to the building. This method provides a striking and direct display but requires a secure installation to prevent the flag from sagging.

Installation

Use a sturdy, horizontal bracket designed to support the weight and dimensions of the flag.

The American Flag

When the flag is displayed horizontally or at an angle from a building or porch, the union (stars) should be at the top of the flagpole, unless the flag is at half-staff. When displayed against a flat surface (like a wall), the union should be uppermost and to the observer’s left. Make sure the flag has enough clearance to hang freely without hitting the ground, walls, or other objects.

By following these steps, you can hang a horizontal flag from your building or porch in a way that is both secure and visually appealing.
